The Project
Saltmarshes are one of the ocean’s most overlooked ecosystems—vast carbon stores and biodiversity lifelines found in over 120 countries. Often absent from global discussions, historically they have been seen as wastelands and ideal sites for industry, for chemical plants and for airports.

Salt of The Earth began when Director Sophie Hunter was invited to visit the Venice Lagoon with Professor Andrea D’Alpaos, a scientist who has dedicated his life to preserving his local salt marshes. Having already developed a personal connection to the marshes through her research, by the end of the boat journey these seemingly unremarkable tufts of vegetation emerging from water were now the most precious, critical and sacred entities. Her view had been transformed.

Salt of The Earth is a touring theatre installation set within the saltmarshes, with an accompanying community programme, restoring the relationship between humans and their landscape. The production lends its convening power, serving as a meeting point for scientists, NGOs, community groups, policy and decision makers as well those who are already the stewards of their local salt marshes. Through a unique arts and science based approach, everywhere Salt of The Earth goes the project connects with local communities, catalyses local action whilst driving global awareness. At the heart of the project is a belief that storytelling is a powerful force for inciting and inspiring change.
