‘Songs of the Saltmarsh’, UNOC (Nice)
- June 2025
‘Songs of The Saltmarsh’ at the United Nations Ocean Conference 2025 launched the first ever State of the World’s Saltmarshes report, featuring a Salt of the Earth chorale intervention as a signal of how culture and science can work together to amplify the global importance of saltmarshes. The event opened with a panel discussion, featuring Sophie Hunter alongside world-leading saltmarsh experts. The launch of the report is an exciting stepping stone for the UN 2030 Saltmarsh Breakthrough, a project designed to unite countries with saltmarsh habitats in a collective action plan, and to drive restoration and climate resilience globally.
The event was also a moment for Sophie to proudly announce our invitation to be part of the coalition that will be supporting the Breakthrough.
The chorale presented alongside film excerpts showing Venetian saltmarsh created a powerful and memorable experience, described by Charles Clover (co-founder of the Blue Marine Foundation):
“Never in all my 35 years at UN conference events have I had a surprise like it. The hairs rose on the back of my neck… I had never seen the bringing together of art and science in this way before.”
This artistic intervention was generously supported by Coexistence Story, one of Salt of The Earth's core partners who have been part of the project since its premiere in Venice. Coexistence Story is a charity dedicated to conservation through storytelling, their first project being the world renowned conversation installation The Great Elephant Migration.
